Last night I went and saw Logic at Koko and he was awesome. He gave of himself. He interacted with his fans, giving one 17 year old the chance to come up on stage and rap as he couldn’t remember the lyrics to Soul Food anymore. So up stepped 17 year old Lewis, understandably nervous. Now along with me, who I went with and people we chatted with around us, it was a good crowd, were all hoping this kid didn’t flop. Logic gave him the run down, keep the mic close to your mouth, move your arms, own it. So the music for Soul food drops for the second time and of Lewis goes. He killed it, the crowd was going crazy and when he finished and he went back into the crowd with the whole of Koko chanting “Lewis! Lewis! Lewis!” I bet when he wakes up this morning he hopes that wasn’t a dream.
At the end of the show Logic signed his cap and faked to throw it in the crowd, after his encore he saw this girl in the crowd who he said has been rapping along to every song, and with the last song didn’t miss a word. He cut the music and again did his verse and she was still on point and again and in the end he gave her his cap. In an intimate crowd like that you can connect with people. Last example of that, just in front of me to my right there was a guy with a super Mario top on who Logic pointed out and then later spoke with him.
He showcased his skills with some A Capella verses as well as speeding up his raps. There is no doubting his skills as an MC but want was also refreshing was how much he wanted to give back to the crowd. Giving of himself as a person. He didn’t just come out, perform get his money and go, no, he was genuine in what he said. He wants people to know that you can do anything you want if you believe in yourself and try. That positivity he wants to pass on he also explained that isn’t coming from a place of always being happy. In fact he finds himself writing or posting the most positives things when he is feeling the opposite of that. When he is this lows, and I understood that completely. He expressed that money is not the route of all happiness either. It can help with life but it’s not what makes you happy. Though he joked “yeah I have that rapper money” but it isn’t what makes him happy. It’s being able to do what he loves and to share it and have the appreciation for it. Again that is something I relate to. He also touched on how the beginning of this year was the hardest he’s had. He was dealing with anxiety and panic attacks. I don’t know if this is what lead to him cancelling the original dates back in March and rescheduled for August, but I think it gave people a little insight into the man behind the music.
The set he did was a mixture of old and new. Some songs from the first album - Under Pressure; Soul Foo D; I’m Gone; Gang Related; Buried Alive; Under Pressure; Till the End, some from the second album - The Incredible True Story Never Been; Run It; Stainless; Lord Willin’; Young Jesus but no big Lembo; Intermission, where he brought out Lucy Rose; Upgrade; Like Woah; Fade away and some from his latest mixtape – which I have yet to listen to – Bobby Tarantino one of the songs is something he said he didn’t have when he first mentioned the guy wearing the Super Mario top, but second time round talking to him dropped it. When he finished his set the crowd chanted him name, clapped and cheered and he back out and did one last song and then that was that. And end to a great night where he gave everything and the crowd gave back. I will go see him again and will advise anyone that is a Rap fan if they don’t know his music check it out and go see him too.
